UAV design
Development of 7-inch and 5-inch drones
Two multirotors built side by side, a 5-inch tuned for agility and a 7-inch for endurance, with matched propulsion and a tuned centre of gravity.
The requirement
The problem this answered.
In a multirotor, agility and endurance pull against each other. Building both sizes let us measure the trade-off.
Constraints and operating environment: Comparative flight testing of both airframes.
Vebix scope
What we did.
We built a 5-inch and a 7-inch multirotor and compared them. The 5-inch was tuned for agility, quick response and fast manoeuvres. The 7-inch was tuned for efficiency, endurance and a steady ride with a payload.
Choosing the propulsion, matching motors to propellers and getting the centre of gravity right were the main design tasks. Tests of flight time, responsiveness and stability then shaped the next round of changes.
